New Delhi Gandhi International Airport, India |
| |
Travelers flying in and out of New Delhi's India Gandhi International Airport can expect an increase in traffic congestion for six months starting from March, when one of the three runways is shut down. Runway 28 will be shut down so that it can undergo an upgrade which will make it operational for Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft before the Commonwealth Games in October. With the closure of one runway, the capacity of the airport will decrease by 20 per cent. Runways 27 and 29, which will be operational after runway 28 is closed, are not parallel runways and no two aircraft can land or take off at the same time. This may lead to a major congestion.

Washington Dulles International Airport, DC |
| |
After nearly eight years of digging and more than a decade of planning, Washington Dulles International Airport will unveil a $1.5 billion train system designed to help travelers reach their gates more quickly. The new system replaces the airport's mobile lounges that have been used to shuttle passengers between terminals since the airport's opening in 1962. The mobile lounges will remain in use for international flights for the time being. The AeroTrain starts above the baggage claim area and runs along almost 4 miles of track. The system's 29 electric rail cars maximize space by offering standing-room only, with the exception of eight seats per car. The three-car train can get up to 42 mph, arrives every two minutes during peak travel times with room for about 50 passengers.

Nigeria - On January 27 the U.S. Mission in Nigeria issued the following Warden Message: "The following message is being issued jointly by the U.S. Embassy Abuja and U.S. Consulate General Lagos for U.S. citizens in Nigeria. "This warden message is being issued to inform U.S. citizens in Nigeria about recent incidents of violence in Plateau State. Rioting in many parts of Jos and several surrounding areas has led to significant casualties and property destruction. While current reporting indicates the violence may be subsiding, the Jos area remains tense and potentially volatile. There is also concern that these incidents may result in acts of communal violence, quickly and without notice, in other areas of Northern Nigeria.
"As a result, U.S. Mission Nigeria has temporarily deferred non-essential travel of all U.S. Mission personnel to Plateau State. U.S. citizens are urged to be vigilant and take appropriate security precautions to ensure their own safety and wellbeing during this period of unrest, and to reevaluate their travel plans to and within Plateau State in light of the foregoing information. ..."
