Air Jamaica
 

Air Jamaica announced it will suspend service on three routes and take three Airbus A320 aircraft out of service. The first route cuts take effect March 9, when Air Jamaica eliminates New York, NY.-Grenada and Jamaica-Orlando, FL. service. On April 12, Air Jamaica will suspend service between Jamaica and Chicago, IL., Curacao and Nassau. By April 12, the carrier will operate 161 flights per week between Jamaica and five gateways: Baltimore, MD., Philadelphia, PA., Toronto, New York Kennedy and Fort Lauderdale, FL. The current schedule offers 160 flights per week to 12 destinations. Air Jamaica will offer thrice-daily service to New York (two from Kingston, one from Montego Bay) and will fly four times per day to Fort Lauderdale (three from Kingston). The airline will operate one daily flight from Montego Bay to the other three cities.


AirTran Airways
 

AirTran announced it will begin offering two daily nonstop flights between Baltimore, MD. and Jacksonville, FL.AirTran announced starting May 4 it will offer service from Grand Rapid, MI. to Baltimore, MD., and Orlando, FL.


Alaska Airlines
 

Alaska announced a new elite level frequent flyer program for passengers who log 75,000 or more miles on Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air. Travelers can also qualify for MVP Gold 75K elite program if they fly 90,000 miles on the airline's qualifying partners and on Alaska or Horizon, or if they fly 90 flight segments on qualifying partners or on Alaska/Horizon. Benefits for the new elite program flyers, above the airline's current MVP Gold program, include getting top priority on first-class upgrade lists, the ability to give a friend or relative the airline's MVP status, 50,000 bonus miles for making the new level, dedicated customer care phone lines and discounts for Alaska Airlines' boardroom memberships.


American Airlines
 

American Airlines is announced that Sam Choy, celebrity consulting chef for American Airlines, has created new Asian-fusion entrees to augment the American Airlines premium cabin inflight experience. First and Business Class customers traveling to and from Tokyo can savor a new, enhanced menu that artfully blends the deep traditions of Japanese cuisine with the flavors of western fare. New, signature dishes from Chef Choy featured on American's premium-class menus will include: Edamame Hummus with Pita Chips, Gingered Scallops with Lobster Sauce, Grilled Beef Filet with Mushroom Medley, Hibachi Miso Chicken, Pulehu Filet with Shiitake Mushroom Cream Sauce, Tahitian Crabmeat Soup, Teriyaki Filet with Braised Pineapple, Wok BBQ Shrimp, and Wasabi-Crusted Salmon. In addition to Chef Choy's new menu options, American offers familiar Japanese elements on flights to and from Tokyo. Sake, traditional Japanese slippers, and Japanese newspapers Asahi Shimbun and Nikkei, as well as Asian editions of the Wall Street Journal and USA Today are available for customers to enjoy inflight.


Continental Airlines
 

Continental Airlines announced it will increase flights from Newark, N.J., to London's Heathrow Airport this year. The airline will add a fourth daily service to the route in March and a fifth daily service in October. That will bring the total number of Continental daily departures to Heathrow to seven, including its twice-daily service from Houston. Also, Continental said that effective June 1, 2010 all aircraft scheduled for Heathrow flights will feature new lie-flat seats in its BusinessFirst cabin.


Delta Air Lines
 

Delta Air Lines will be introducing a nonstop daily flight between Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Lincoln, NE. Flights begin June 4.

Delta has announced new nonstop service to the Cayman Islands from the New York area set to kick off on June 12. Flights will operate once a week on Saturdays using the 160-seat Boeing 737-800. Flights depart at 8:10 a.m. from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and arrive at Grand Cayman at 11:10 a.m. Flights depart Grand Cayman at 12 p.m. and arrive back in New York at 5:15 p.m.


Ethiopian Airlines
 

Ethiopian has announced it is increasing its number of flights from Washington D.C. with the launch of daily passenger flight between Washington Dulles and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, commencing this June 2010. Morning departures will be available 10:05 a.m. every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from Washington Dulles with 8:05 p.m. evening departures on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The airline will offer 10:15 p.m. nightly service from Addis Ababa to Washington.


Oman Air
 

Oman announced passengers will have access to Internet connectivity and be able to use their mobile devices from mid-February when the airline launches these services - a first for the airline industry on a newly-delivered Airbus A330. Oman Air's first A330 combined mobile and WiFi offering will most likely service its London Heathrow to Muscat route.


Southwest Airlines
 

Southwest has announced it will begin installing equipment in its 540 plus planes in the second quarter of 2010. Southwest expects to finish in early 2012. So far, no decision has been made on how much flyers will have to pay to use the service.


United Airlines
 

United has announced it will begin seasonal nonstop service to Anchorage, AK. with once-weekly Saturday flights to/from Chicago, IL. Starting June 9 - August 30, this service will increase to daily roundtrip flights linking Anchorage with Chicago, Denver, CO. and San Francisco, CA. A second roundtrip flight will operate between Chicago and Anchorage on Saturdays. Between September 4 - September 25, service returns to Saturday-only roundtrip service between Anchorage and Chicago. United's Anchorage service is timed for convenient connections to and from dozens of cities throughout the continental U. S., Hawaii, eastern Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

United has announced that new customer self-service check-in units are now available at Paddington Railway Station in London - the first train station in the United Kingdom to offer these state-of-the-art facilities. Located near the platforms used by Heathrow Express, the new units have easy-to-use touch screens and will make traveling to and from the airport more convenient and efficient for United customers by allowing them to view flight information and print their ticket before arriving at the airport.

United announced it will inaugurate its first-ever service to Africa this spring with one daily, same-plane service from Washington, DC. to Accra, Ghana and Lagos, Nigeria. We also will extend our existing daily Washington-Kuwait flight to include Bahrain, and will offer a new nonstop flight between Chicago, IL. and Brussels, Belgium. Introduction of all of the new services is subject to government approval.

Boston Logan Airport
 

Boston Logan is now offering free Wi-Fi Internet access. In partnership with service provider Advanced Wireless Group, the free Wi-Fi will be supported by advertising and sponsorship. Boston was one of 32 airports that had stopped charging for Wi-Fi for two months under a Google-sponsored program in November. During the free period, use of its network increased nearly sixfold. Before the Google sponsorship, Wi-Fi users were charged $7.95 per day.


Little Rock National Airport
 

The Little Rock National Airport now offers skycap service to help passengers carry luggage from the curb to airline counters or bag-check stations. The airport began offering the service after five of the airport's six airlines ended curbside check-in last year.


London Heathrow International Airport
 

Britain introduced body scanners at Heathrow airport Monday, February 1. The scanners, which see through clothes to produce an image of the body, have caused unease among human rights campaigners who fear an invasion of passengers' privacy as well as the disproportionate scrutiny of Muslim travelers by authorities.

Botswana - On February 3 the U.S. Embassy in Gaborone issued the following Warden Message: "The U.S. Embassy in Gaborone, Botswana has received updated information on criminal activities targeting shopping complexes and residences in Gaborone. U.S. citizens are encouraged to be vigilant and take precautions to ensure their safety and security. "The Embassy has received information that there are groups of criminals operating at shopping complexes in Gaborone, particularly at the Game City shopping center. They are working together in teams to target individuals and rob them. One or two members of the gang will distract the targeted person, while another will then grab the valuables. Reports indicate that the criminals have been non-violent, but they will resort to violence if necessary. "The Embassy has also received reports of individuals attempting to gain entrance into residences or gain information about the occupants and security systems by posing as government or security guard company representatives. If you are unsure about the legitimacy of the individuals at your gate, do not let them in. "Security Suggestions from the Embassy Regional Security Office: "When visiting crowded shopping areas in Gaborone, please remember the following principles: "Be aware at all times of who is around you. As you walk and shop, stop periodically and look behind you. "Do not advertise valuables, including phones, iPods, and jewelry. "Backpacks and purses should be zipped up and carried securely in the front of the body. "Wallets and other valuables should be carried in front or side cargo pockets, and not in the rear pockets. "Keep some small bills in external pockets to pay for items to avoid displaying the contents of your wallet to everyone in the checkout queue. "What to do if you are a victim?"If you are robbed, remain calm, and call the police on 999 from a secure area to report the incident. "If robbed, do not try to confront or apprehend the assailants. "For after-hours emergency assistance from the U.S. Embassy, contact the Embassy at 395-7111."

India - On January 30 the U.S. Department of State issued a Travel Alert for India which reads as follows: "The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to ongoing security concerns in India. The U.S. government continues to receive information that terrorist groups may be planning attacks in India. Terrorists and their sympathizers have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where U.S. citizens or Westerners are known to congregate or visit. This replaces the Travel Alert dated December 29, 2009, and expires on April 30, 2010.

"The November 2008 attacks in Mumbai provide a vivid reminder that hotels, markets, and other public places are especially attractive targets for terrorist groups. U.S. citizens are urged always to practice good security, maintain a heightened situational awareness and a low profile. U.S. citizens are advised to monitor local news reports and consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues."

Mexico - On February 3 the U.S. Consulate General in Monterrey issued a Warden Message that reads in part as follows: "The United States Consulate General in Monterrey would like to advise American citizens that incidents of carjackings have increased significantly in and around the San Pedro Garza Garcia and Monterrey areas in the state of Nuevo Leon. Reports indicate that over four dozen vehicles have been stolen by force in the last three weeks. Recent carjackings have occurred at all times, day and night, and both male and female drivers have been victimized in these crimes. Victims have been selected and approached following both short and extensive surveillance operations. All incidents involve small arms or knives. Recent incidents have shown that the perpetrators are willing to use violence against their victims.

"American citizens in the Monterrey consular district should remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Citizens should be on the alert for being followed or being placed under some form of hasty surveillance in public venues. If surveillance is detected or suspected, citizens are encouraged to call the local police, then proceed to a police station, fire station, or other public safe haven. It is not recommended that the citizen proceed directly to his or her home or place of residence.

"If victimized in an auto robbery or other property crime, citizens are advised not to resist and relinquish their keys and belongings. It is also strongly recommended to remove any specific personally identifying items from your vehicle. Maintain only the bare essentials in terms of documentation (insurance, registration, etc). "The U.S. Consulate General Monterrey stresses the importance of route and time variance as well as situational awareness. We recommend that American citizens residing in or visiting Monterrey discuss these incidents with their family members in order to educate them as the safety situation in the area. ..."

Peru - - On February 2 the U.S. Embassy in Lima issued the following Warden Message: "On January 28 the Peruvian Government declared a 60-day state of emergency in Cusco Province, in the Peruvian Andes, because unusually severe seasonal rains caused flooding and landslides. The capital city of Lima is not affected.

"Peruvian authorities announced the Machu Picchu archeological park and Inca Trail are closed. The rail line between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes, the base camp for Machu Picchu, is closed due to landslides and will remain closed possibly until March. There is flooding along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. "Tourist sites within the city of Cusco are open and operating as usual. Regular flights in and out of the city of Cusco continue, but delays due to bad weather are not uncommon.

"The rainy season in Cusco generally lasts into March, but the El Nino phenomenon this year may aggravate or extend the rainy season. Travelers may wish to monitor the media and consult with their travel professional for up to date information on closings at individual sites, and may consider deferring travel until conditions improve."

Qatar - On January 28 the U.S. Embassy in Doha issued the following Warden Message: "The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. Current threat information suggests that al-Qaida and other affiliated extremist organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in Qatar and elsewhere in the Middle East region. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide and vehicle bombing operations, shootings and assassinations, kidnappings and hijackings.

"Violent extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons to carry out their attacks, and may choose to target both official (Diplomatic and Military) and/or private interests. Examples of such targets include shopping malls, sporting events, Western residential areas, business offices, hotels, Western clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, and other public areas and locales where Americans gather."

Turkey - On February 3 the U.S. Consulate in Adana issued the following Warden Message: "This Warden Message updates U.S. citizens regarding the gunfire near the U.S. Consulate in Adana on January 31, 2010. After further investigation it appears that this was an attack on the U.S. Consulate. Turkish police have arrested several individuals today in relation to the shooting. The U.S. Consulate encourages all U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to maintain their security awareness. The Consulate continues to be open for regular business. ..."
