Airport/Destination News
Los Angeles International Airport, CA

Los Angeles unveiled its newly remodeled Tom Bradley International Terminal last week, a project that cost $737 million and took more than three years to complete. Among the new features: wider and better-lit corridors in check-in lobbies, baggage carousels that handle bags faster, renovated restrooms and two aircraft gates that can accommodate new-generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The terminal, which serves more than 8 million passengers a year, is considered a gateway to Asia but has not had a major overhaul since 1984. In keeping with a more contemporary look, the project also improved accessibility for disabled passengers and installed energy-efficient lighting and clearer signs, the airport says. Like other recently renovated terminals, it also has a new behind-the-scenes checked-bag-processing facility that reduces lobby congestion by eliminating the need for passengers to haul their luggage to a screening machine in the lobby. Go Lakers!

State Dept. Travel Warnings and Public Announcements

For the full announcements or further detail on Travel Warnings and Public Announcements, please see http://http://travel.state.gov/

Ecuador - On June 8 the U.S. Embassy in Quito issued the following Warden Message:"The Tungurahua Volcano's seismic activity remains high but with little change from yesterday. Explosions continue to be very frequent and strong, with some of the blasts being felt as far as Ambato, over 20 miles away. "AIRPORT INFORMATION: "At this time all airports in Ecuador remain open "REPORT OF AMERICAN CITIZENS AFFECTED: "There are no reports to date of American Citizens affected by the volcanic activity. However, per the advisory sent on Friday, June 4, 2010 to all American citizens in Ecuador, U.S. citizens are advised to defer all travel and lodging in the Baños area and the area of the volcano for the foreseeable future. Further, the Embassy encourages any American citizens living in the Baños area and the area of the volcano to consider evacuation until the activity subsides."

Estonia - On June 7 the U.S. Embassy in Tallinn issued a Warden Message, which reads in part as follows: "The consular section of the U.S. embassy wishes to share some common sense advice with private American citizens living in or visiting Estonia to help them remain safe during the summer months. "The tourist season is now upon us in Tallinn and with it comes additional concerns about crime and personal safety. Tallinn will be filled daily with an influx of tourists coming from cruise ships and tours, as well as those who want to make easy money by scamming and stealing from them. Every summer we see an increase in personal crimes, such as pick-pocketing, especially in the heavily traveled areas of the old town and this year is no exception. Pay attention to your surroundings and make yourself a hard target for crime: keep your valuables in a zippered or interior pocket if possible, or in the front of your pants pockets. If you carry a purse or bag, keep it closed (zippered or snapped shut) and in your possession at all times - a favorite place to grab bags is from the floor by your feet while eating at a café. Remember, if you look like a 'tourist' and are not security conscious, you're saying 'pick me' to a would-be criminal.

"Tallinn has seen a slight increase in property crimes in the spring of 2010 and it is more important than ever to be security conscious. Any bag or item left in a vehicle is a lure for a criminal - do not leave items in plain sight in your car. Additionally, always lock your doors and set any alarms you have at your residence. The police have reported several incidents of break-ins, especially in apartment buildings, where thieves walk through the hallways trying all doors until they find one that is unlocked. Do not leave valuable items (such as lawn mowers or bicycles) unattended, which provide a target of opportunity for theft."

Israel / Palestinian Authority - On June 7 the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv and U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem issued a Warden Message, which reads in part as follows: "The US Embassy in Tel Aviv advises American citizens in Israel to be alert when traveling in Green Line Israel in the vicinity of the Gaza Strip border due to recent tensions, to include an IDF interdiction of a small boat off of the Gaza Strip carrying weapons and passengers in dive suits, and continued rocket and mortar launches into Green Line Israel. U.S. Government employees are currently restricted from travel along the Gaza Strip border for non-essential purposes. "Early on May 31, 2010, members of the Israeli Defense Force intercepted and boarded a six-ship flotilla, resulting in the deaths of nine flotilla participants, including one American citizen. "U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Mali - On June 9 the U.S. Embassy issued the following Warden Message: "The U.S. Embassy in Bamako is issuing this Warden Message to inform U.S. citizens in Mali that unconfirmed information suggesting Westerners, to include U.S. citizens, may be the targets of kidnapping efforts in southern Mali, including Bamako. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. "This information is in addition to the information discussed in the Embassy's Warden Messages of June 5, 2010, November 17, 2009, and December 2, 2009 as well as the U.S. Department of State's Travel Warning for Mali, dated November 19, 2009, regarding the kidnapping threat in the Timbuktu, Kidal, and Gao regions of Mali. The Embassy and the Department of State continue to strongly recommend against all travel to these regions of Mali."

Mexico - On June 9 the U.S. Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo issued the following Warden Message: "The United States Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo has received reports that the Mexican military has been involved in a gunfight with armed persons, reportedly narcotics cartel gunmen, in the vicinity of the Wal-Mart on Avenida Reforma. We therefore advise all U.S. citizens to avoid the area for the time being. U.S. citizens should stay current with media coverage of local events."
