The Travel Industry and the Internet
Like all other businesses, the Internet is changing the way we do business. The travel industry is evolving and we continue to stay in motion in order to thrive. Agencies must incorporate and use the Internet as a tool for their future success.
Travel counselors provide service and knowledge. They save customers time and money. Most people are unwilling to spend large amounts of money if they are not familiar with a particular destination, and many travelers do not want to spend large amounts of money over the Internet. Travel counselors are familiar with vendors and destinations. They work on behalf of the customer – meeting their needs and getting the best value for their money.
HOW DO AGENCIES USE THE INTERNET?
Agencies use the Internet for INFORMATION. Travel counselors research online to be better informed, to be more productive, and to find answers and information more quickly.
Agencies use the Internet to COMMUNICATE with their customers by the use of e-mail. Travel counselors can quickly contact a client with special deals.
Agencies use the Internet as a MARKETING tool. Most travel agencies have their own website for customers to visit. Having a website creates a wider market reach.
Agencies can use the Internet as a RESERVATION tool. Travel agencies can now make reservations over the web and continue to receive commissions from vendors.
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
Industry experts are predicting that more travel agents will SPECIALIZE. Whether it is to a certain destination or catering to certain age groups, more travel agents will find a niche market. Opportunities abound for corporate, international, leisure counselors, group and meeting planners, customer service representatives, and reservationists. In addition, more and more agents will be working out of their home. Membership in a consortium to have bulk buying power will be important. Again, someone must process the bookings done over the Internet.
Some items are easy to purchase over the web. However, some items are too involved, too unique, or the customer wants to discuss the product with someone in person. This applies to our business. Travel counselors provide service to the customer!
